Fire Alarm Fundamentals (Formerly Basic Fire Alarm Systems)
Based on the NFPA 72, 2022

Course Description

This basic fire alarm seminar is an application course beneficial for new installers, sales personnel, service technicians, plus building and fire inspectors involved in acceptance testing and/or plans review. This course is also useful as a refresher for anyone involved with fire alarms.

Course Objective

Upon completion of this course, the attendee will be able to identify the basic fire alarm system fundamentals, system components, installation requirements, and the proper methods used to satisfy the requirements of NFPA 72, National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code and NFPA 70, National Electrical Code.

This course consists of 7 Contact Hours for continuing education. The student must attend the entire seminar to receive credit.

Student should bring the respective editions of NFPA-72 for the class.

Tom Hammerberg is an independent contractor and retired from the Automatic Fire Alarm Association in June 2017.He continues to present seminars nationally. Tom has been in the alarm industry for 44 years and was with AFAA for 23 years, serving as President/Executive Director and Director of Industry Relations. Tom is NICET Level IV certified in the field of Fire Alarm Systems and is a Certified Fire Protection Specialist.


The NWAFAA is a chapter of the Automatic Fire Alarm Association serving the Pacific Northwest. This organization brings together Engineers, AHJ's, Vendors, Installers, Manufacturers and End Users in the fire alarm industry to further the industry.
